Only being available for three model years, and offered exclusively as the standard engine in the Z/28 Camaro of ’67-’69, the high-revving 302 combined components from the 283 and the 327, respectively, having been designed to meet the 5.0 L capacity limit of the SCCA Trans-Am Championship. It was used widely in the Chevy II / Nova and Chevelle models. Produced from 1968 to 1972 it utilized the same 3.875″ bore as the very first Chevy small block, but with a wider journals to accept the 327 crankshaft. The 307 was the last of the Generation I small blocks that link back to the original motors of the mid-1950s. At 1.146 hp-per-cubic inch it held the record for power to displacement for a small block for almost 40 years until the 2001 Gen III LS6. Introduced in ’62 and available on all models from the Chevy II to the Corvette, the high-revving 327 came in a variety of specifications throughout its short-lived lifespan ranging in horsepower numbers of 210 to 375, respectively. The fuel injected version of the 283 was also an available option on the passenger car line as well as the Corvette, making any vehicle equipped with this advanced fuel delivery system a collector’s item today. Also in 1957, the 283 was the first Chevrolet engine which offered factory fuel injection, helping the motor develop the magic 1 hp-per-cubic inch output.įive variations of the 283 were made available in 1957 alone, ranging from 185hp to 283hp thanks to the option of a single, dual carburetor or the Rochester mechanical fuel injection system, which produced the magic 1 hp per cubic inch. This error shouldn't be the reason that keeps you from buying these useful books though.The original 265 can trace its existence back to the Corvette division, where the demanding engineers were seeking an upgrade over the current Corvette motor, Chevy’s “stove bolt” inline-six. I wanted to quote the "Chevrolet By the Numbers" information so people know where the idea that this block is rare might have come from. This block casting number they just happened to way underestimate the quantity of them that were produced. This is not to say that the "Chevrolet By the Numbers" books aren't still a great resource for Chevy information though. The block doesn't have any special features that sets it off from the rest that would make it any more desirable than other blocks from that time period though. The problem is there are no exact numbers as to how many cars had this block casting number but it is way more than what it takes to be called rare. So in other words this block casting is not at all rare in our opinion. We have apparently had all (and then some) of the owners, according to Chevrolet by the Numbers 1965-69, of this block casting to email us about it. Most #3932388 blocks are dated from September to December 1968." Other cars could have received this rare block, but it is unknown which or why.

At least one Camaro was built it September 1969 with this block. At least four SS 350 and at least two Z28 Camaros were built with this block, with casting dates ranging from L 20 8 to C 11 9.

It has been found in Passenger cars with the 350/300hp engine suffix code stamping. From all indications the block is identical to #3932386. It seems that most blocks were Tonawanda cast and built, but some Norwood assembled Z28's used this block with Flint-produced engines. Their notes say this and I quote (but is actually false info): Let me put it in plain english it is NOT RARE!!! The book Chevrolet by the Numbers 1965-69: The Essential Chevrolet Parts Reference says this engine was put in 1969 passenger cars and Camaro's. There seems to still be some confusion on this though. The casting number 3932388 is "said to be rare" because "they say" not many cars much less Camaro's got this block casting number that are known.
